Taos’ high desert climate and pure air are powerful enough reasons to make the town a health destination. But there is more: the mineral springs in and around Taos, like Ojo Caliente, the first natural health spa in the country, and Manby Springs, are also renowned for their curative properties. The town now has health facilities that range from a modern hospital and alternative and Oriental medicine practitioners to traditional healers.
Holy Cross Hospital
In 1936 Mabel Dodge Lujan donated a house to the town to be used as a community hospital. From its earliest days, the hospital combined old traditions with new and innovative treatments. Holy Cross Hospital is today a progressive regional acute care facility that provides curative, preventative and supportive health care services. The facility’s 80 resident and staff physicians cover a variety of ever-expanding specialties that include internal medicine, cardiology, obstetrics, women’s services, family practice, radiology and laboratory services, orthopedics, pediatrics, general surgery, urology and a fully staffed emergency department.
The hospital was recognized by the American Hospital Association with a NOVA award for their community-based First Steps Program —a program that works with first-time parents and families.
